Save the Date! Perspectives on the Science and Ethics of Animal-Based Research

When? February 16 2010 at 6:00 PM (28 Weeks ago)
What? Speaker
Where? UCLA - Young CS 50

With the goal of opening an on-going dialogue between individuals who are in favor or against the use of animals in biomedical research, UCLA Bruins for Animals and Pro-Test for Science invite you to a panel discussion on this complex topic. The event is structured to maximize the opportunity to engage in a civil, intellectually honest discussion on issues about which people hold passionate, differing opinions.

Three panelists on each side will briefly present their personal views on the topic, followed by moderator-driven discussion and questions from the audience.

The event will be moderated by David Lazarus of the Los Angeles Times.

There has been a change in obtaining tickets for this event.

Admission is now open to ticketed members of the UCLA community only. Ticket availability is now being offered through UCLA's Central Ticket Office. Active Bruincards are required to obtain a ticket and to gain access to the event, itself.

Please note that because this event is intended as a civilized dialogue where we can actually focus on and discuss the topics for this event, which are the science and ethics of animal based research, and because of security concerns for our speakers, organizers, and attendees, we have decided to make the above changes with regards to ticketing. This decision was made in light of the recent actions such as home demonstrations, threatening emails and internet posts of individuals who seem determined to interfere with what we believe is a necessary forum to spread information about why we are opposed to animal-based research.

Open Notification to Los Angeles Community (revised 2/4/10)

We are aware that many individuals outside the UCLA community wish to attend our upcoming event “Perspectives on the Science and Ethics of Animals Used in Research” on February 16th, 2010.

Ideally this event would be open to the general public and originally this was our intention. Due to the fact that a small group of disruptive and irrational individuals attempted to stop this event by way of threats and intimidation, we have had no option but to make this event closed to the broad public due to the aforementioned security concerns. These same individuals have called for open debate in the past but, for reasons not fully known or understood, are now apparently trying to sabotage our efforts to promote open dialogue and education of this important issue. It is unfortunate that the actions of a small group have resulted in the closing of this event that so many of you wish to attend, and for this, we apologize. We will however be recording this event and will make the video accessible online for everyone to view.

Bruins for Animals unequivocally condemns acts of violence in every form– whether it be towards animals or humans. Moreover the disruptive and divisive actions perpetrated by a small minority has the unfortunate potential to overshadow the scientific and ethical reasons why many are opposed to vivisection. The February 16th event is intended to be a forum where it is possible to openly and intelligently discuss the issue and, from our perspective, educate others about the scientific and ethical reasons why BFA, other groups and members of the community are strongly opposed to it.

We encourage all UCLA affiliates who wish to come and participate in this important event to visit our website for information on obtaining a ticket. For those who are unable to attend, we welcome you to please send in your questions that you would like to ask the panelists to bfa@ucla.edu. We will send your questions to the event moderator. You are also welcome to attend our weekly meeting on Thursday if you have any questions or concerns as we are more than happy to meet you.

Thoughts on the February 16, 2010 UCLA-sponsored panel discussion

General Winter Meeting #7

When? February 18 2010 at 6:00 PM (28 Weeks ago)
What? General Meeting
Where? UCLA - Haines Hall Room A28

General meeting lasting till about 7pm. Those who've attended in the past, come and continue your loyalty to the club by keeping up on what's new and helping plan our next events. Or if you haven't attended a meeting yet, it's definitely never too late. Anyone with even the slightest concern for the well-being of animals is more than welcome!

We will be having Casey Suchan and Denis Hennelly come over to talk; they are filmmakers who have most recently made a film known as Bold Native are also animal activists and use film and the media to help animals. Their movie highlights the story of an animal liberator who has been attributed to "terrorism" - a label that Casey and Denis explain should not be thrown around the way it is regarding those who seek to liberate or otherwise help animals.

Please note the NEW location. We will continue to hold the meetings at this location, day, and time for the rest of the quarter.

If needed, you can access a UCLA Map here.
