Where?
UCLA - MS 7608
We'll be having a speaker at this one, Ciddy Fonteboa from Animal Acres. Come one come all! Those who've attended in the past, come and continue your loyalty to the club by keeping up on what's new and helping plan our next events. Along with the speaker, who is scheduled to speak starting at the meeting's official beginning (6pm), we'll be making posters in preparation for honoring World Week for Animals in Labs (which will take place the following week, the week Earth Day falls on). We'll be using these posters at the demo the Thursday of that week. Some posters will be also made in preparation for promoting UCLA's transition to cage-free eggs. Most if not all of the poster-making will take place before the official meeting start time - some of us will be there starting at about 5pm! So see if you can bring your best art supplies. ;) See ya there.

When? April 22 2010 at 12:00 AM (19 Weeks ago) What? Social
Where?
Ackerman Union - Rm 3508
Join us for a casual vegan lunch meet and a fascinating discussion about animal ethics with Robert C. Jones, Assistant Professor of Philosophy at California State University, Chico. Some of you might also remember him as one of the panelists at our past momentous event, Perspectives on the Science and Ethics of Animals Used in Research.
If you're free and up for some interesting (and very applicable) conversation, here's your chance!
As an important first note, Bruins for Animals! does not view the people involved with, or in support of, animal research as being 'evil.' Although we have our own positions and evaluations of what is being practiced in the name of animal research, our purpose of evaluating is to raise awareness by offering perspectives and information that is significant and beneficial to both human and non-human animals.
In support of eliminating biomedical research using non-human animals, we will be representing the united strength of our community as firm advocates of compassion and effective means of research for human health. The rally will be taking place next Thursday, April 22nd at 11:00 am at the corner of Le Conte & Westwood (try to arrive early!). Be sure you are on the correct side of the street as there will likely be a counter protest (from those who support researching on non-human animals). You will be able to tell which side is which by the signs and literature being distributed.
Why Are We Rallying? Animals in laboratories suffer tremendously: Vivisection can’t be justified neither ethically nor scientifically. Those who practice vivisection - and accuse their opponents of being overly "sentimental" toward animals - tout the self-serving presumption that the question ultimately boils down to "animals' lives instead of yours". By contrast, antivivisectionists consider the vivisectors' stock question "Would you prefer to save a mouse or a child?" to be meaningless. Instead, they ask: "Why not strive to save both? Why be forced to choose between two evils?"
Animals have rights: Racists are people who think that the members of their race are superior to the members of other races simply because the former belong to their (the "superior") race. Sexists believe that the members of their sex are superior to the members of the opposite sex simply because the former belong to their (the "superior") sex. There is no "superior" or "inferior" sex or race. Racial and sexual differences are biological, not moral, differences.
The same is true of speciesism -- the view that members of the species Homo sapiens are superior to members of every other species simply because human beings belong to one's own (the "superior") species. For there is no "superior" species. To think otherwise is to be no less predjudiced than racists or sexists.
– Dr. Tom Regan
Animals yield faulty results: Just as much as justice and compassion for all beings drives us, we are also solid advocates for research methods that truly progress human well-being. Medical doctor, Dr. Ray Greek, breaks down why non-human animals are not predictive models for humans. After years of actually researching on animals with little progress made, Dr. Ray Greek realized, as many do, that using animals as predictive models to cure human diseases simply does not work and we must find effective and ethical methods that do work so we can help cure human diseases. For those who may get the notion that Dr. Ray Greek's finding is based on his personal sentiment toward animals, he makes it very clear that his concern lies in the lack of productivity and translative results of non-human animal research. He does not consider himself to be an animal activist. His website.
Vivisection alone is a 12 BILLION dollar industry (annually)- with this $12 Billion, we can begin to shift our focus to more efficient and justified forms of testing such as Bioinformatics and utilization of the Hurel Chip.
